The clinical commentary is a video-based faculty panel discussion that will utilize an open dialogue and a guided discussion format that will be similar in style to a TV news program such as Meet the Press. Watch as Dr. Madhu Aggarwal and Dr. Pratibha Burli, two leading OB-GYNs currently practicing in the United States, discuss contraceptive misconceptions, methods across women's reproductive lifespan, and better shared decision making. The faculty panel will also include a patient of Indian origin to provide the patient perspectives.
This educational activity is designed for primary care practitioners, including general practitioners, nurse practitioners, community health workers, and physician assistants, as well as obstetricians and gynecologists and other female physicians based in India. In addition to clinician and community health care workers, the activity will also have a patient education focus targeting women to provide information regarding available contraceptive options in India and encouraging initiating discussions with their healthcare provider.
Despite progress and a number of government initiatives aimed at expanding the use of modern contraceptives in India, an interplay of factors present myriad challenges to both patients and clinicians participating in this shared clinical decision-making. Clinicians may lack knowledge and competence with available contraceptive methods and may also face religious and cultural barriers when counseling women. Further, knowledge of contraceptives is suboptimal throughout and women may harbor misconceptions about available contraceptive approaches, their safety, and long-term benefits. Many women in India also lack self-autonomy regarding making their own health decisions and must instead rely on their spouses or other family members to make those decisions for them, often with poor clinical results.

The goals of this educational activity are to provide information to healthcare providers in India about contraception in order to: 1) improve clinician and patient knowledge of available methods of contraception for women across their reproductive lifespan, 2) dispel myths and misconceptions about contraception, and 3) improve participatory medicine/shared decision making.
