Created in conjunction with the ASPEN 2020 Nutrition Science & Practice Conference, the symposium highlights enduring activity will feature an expert panel, who will facilitate discussion around 2 patient cases relating to the nutrition needs of hospitalized adults and who will work through patient segmenting, the assessment of nutritional need, the selection of IVLE formulations, and thoughts on provider collaboration to improve outcomes. To help frame the decision points throughout the cases, the faculty panel will provide patient specifics, evidence of the latest clinical data, and research in the context of the patient’s treatment decisions.
This activity is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians who manage clinical nutrition.
Despite the continued focus on underfeeding in the hospital setting, signs of malnutrition persist in critically ill patients. As our understanding of nutrition in hospitalized patients expands, the importance of newer formulations becomes apparent. Traditional soybean-based IVLE formulations are no longer the only option, and newer formulations, may reduce inflammation.
This activity will provide the nutrition support team with the latest clinical data to help guide learners’ clinical practice, thereby reducing malnutrition, underfeeding, morbidity, and mortality in hospital settings.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Describe the scope and consequences of malnutrition in hospitalized patients
• Interpret available outcome data on new lipid emulsion products and how the differences in fatty acid profiles of new products may influence inflammation and immune function
• Compare and contrast newly available and emerging IVLE nutrition products, and describe how these new products can aid in improving nutrition therapy for hospitalized patients
