Are you current with the recent data and guidance on influenza vaccine selection based on age, risk factors, and individual characteristics? Do you know about the most recently approved and emerging vaccines? Access this comprehensive 60-minute, CME Touchpoint that will walk you through an overview of novel and emerging influenza vaccines and their potential roles in preventative medicine. This Touchpoint is enhanced with videos, graphics, and supplemental resources to provide you with the most up to date information on how to best prevent influenza.

This activity is intended for primary care physicians, internists, pediatricians, geriatricians, pharmacists, and other clinicians who manage patients for whom influenza vaccination is recommended.

Although vaccines are among the most cost-effective preventive services, nearly 45,000 individuals in the U.S. die each year of vaccine-preventable diseases or associated complications. Fortunately, advances in the fields of influenza virology and immunity have created new opportunities to improve vaccine efficacy. Given the complex guidance and emerging data on different influenza vaccines, clinicians require education to guide decisions on vaccine selection as well as to improve understanding of influenza vaccine developments as the number of potential approaches expand and improvements in the magnitude and duration of immune responses are realized.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• List available influenza vaccines and recommendations for use
• Interpret patient and clinical factors to select among the influenza vaccines
• Discuss the latest safety and efficacy data supporting the use of EIV in patients at high-risk for influenza
• Describe ongoing investigations to improve the production and efficacy of influenza vaccines

Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:
• List available influenza vaccines and recommendations for use
• Interpret patient and clinical factors to select among the influenza vaccines
• Discuss the latest safety and efficacy data supporting the use of EIV in patients at high-risk for influenza
• Describe ongoing investigations to improve the production and efficacy of influenza vaccines

Expanding Number of Options for Influenza Vaccination
• Morbidity and mortality of influenza
• Available influenza vaccines
• Vaccine efficacy and effectiveness across diverse patients
• Current ACIP recommendations

Factoring Patient and Clinical Characteristics into Vaccine Selection
• Evidence in the elderly population
• Pharmacoeconomic data
• Immunosuppression and other high-risk groups
• Addressing vaccine hesitancy

Novel Approaches to Vaccine Development
• Current limitations and challenges
• Different approaches to production
• mRNA and self-amplifying mRNA
• Need for a universal vaccine
