In these highlights from a recent nutrition conference, a multidisciplinary panel of experts discuss a range of topics, including the role of indirect calorimetry, protein requirements, intravenous lipid emulsions, and the nutrition support team.  Also highlighted in this series are a real-world patient case and the questions and answers/panel discussion. An accompanying infographic on the importance of the nutrition support team and how to organize one can be downloaded and shared with your team.

The certified education is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians who manage clinical nutrition.

Despite the continued focus on underfeeding and its consequences in hospital settings, 30%-50% of hospitalized patients can be characterized as being malnourished. Further, critical illness interferes with adequate nutritional intake. A recent study of ICU patients found that approximately 30% of patients had malnutrition. Compounding these gaps include a continued fragmentation of nutrition care not only in the ICU but also during the transition of patients back home. To better overcome these ongoing gaps, this education designed for clinicians on the multidisciplinary nutrition support team will highlight the role of newer energy expenditure assessment strategies (e.g. indirect calorimetry), the latest recommendations for protein and intravenous lipid emulsions, the potential use of multichamber bags, and transitions of care.

Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Discuss advances in the use of indirect calorimetry for measuring energy expenditure in patients needing nutritional support
  • Identify protein requirements for optimized nutrition support for patients
  • Employ intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs) into the care of patients receiving nutrition support
  • Explain strategies to improve transitions in care for patients receiving nutrition support

Topics discussed include:
  • Implementing Optimal Nutrition Support in Critically Ill Patients
  • Meeting Protein Requirements in Critically Ill Patients
  • Meeting Fatty Acid and Caloric Requirements in Critically Ill Patients
  • Patient Case Discussion
  • Panel Discussion and Questions and Answers
